The womb may be removed either through an abdominal cut or via the vagina, the latter leaving no visible scar. Increasingly, hysterectomies may be performed via laparoscopic/keyhole surgery in suitable cases.

The decision to remove your ovaries depends on the reason for performing a hysterectomy, age and your personal wishes. Removal of the ovaries reduces the risks of ovarian cancer but results in surgical menopause for premenopausal patients. Consequently, menopausal symptoms acutely start and may require varying forms of hormonal replacement treatment.
