Hysteroscopy is a common procedure, usually carried out on an outpatient basis. At hysteroscopy a small telescope is passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity, the cavity is then visualised, and those images are viewed on a screen. This procedure could be performed under local or general anaesthesia and may aid in the arriving at a diagnosis if you have the following symptoms:
- Heavy or Irregular periods
- Bleeding in between periods
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Repeated miscarriage / infertility
Hysteroscopy is not only employed in the diagnosis of intrauterine abnormalities but can be used to treat them. Abnormalities discovered within the endometrial cavity which can be treated include polyps, fibroids and adhesions.
Overall hysteroscopy is a short, well tolerated and safe procedure. You should be able to return to work with-in 1-2 days of your procedure.
