Also known as “keyhole surgery” or “minimally invasive surgery” is increasingly replacing traditional open surgery. This type of procedure involves passing a small telescope and instruments through tiny incisions in the abdominal wall to visualise the pelvic organs. This may be done to diagnose a problem such as the cause of pelvic pain or infertility. Procedures such as hysterectomies, tubal ligations (BTLs) and oophorectomies (ovaries removed) may also be performed laparoscopically. Though these procedures may take slightly longer to perform, they generally result in less postoperative pain, tiny scars, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.
Below is a list of conditions that might be diagnosed or treated laparoscopically with a brief description of what is performed during the procedure:
- Ovarian cysts – either the cyst or the entire ovary may be removed
- Endometriosis – removal of endometriomas and or pelvic adhesions
- Infertility – tubal patency test and division of pelvic adhesions
- Pelvic Pain – pelvic pathology such as adhesions or endometriosis may be identified and treated
- Hysterectomy- the uterus and or ovaries may be released laparoscopically and removed vaginally
- Ectopic Pregnancy- the ectopic pregnancy may be removed, and pelvic adhesions treated
With respect to pelvic pain and endometriosis, laparoscopy allows for both diagnosis and treatment of the problem at the same time, thus avoiding the need for additional procedures
